I was looking on yahoo answers and found that most users thought that target and home depot sold quality area rugs. Being a person that only has hand woven persian rugs I thought that was actually pretty funny. Then it had me thinking can most people tell the difference? If so how do you tell the difference? Do you think maybe I’m the foolish one for investing so much in rugs when apparently the home depot ones are suppost to be just as good?
Can you tell a quality area rug from a discount one?

i compare the quality of rugs by the density of the fiber- if you bend it and can see the backing, its a cheap rug and wont hold up. good quality rugs are very dense.

yes, you can bend the backing to check the quality – although you might not be able to tell the difference so much at a distance or when new, buying cheap (in my experience) does not prove to be a saving – as the items don’t last as long.
take a look at this guide on how to choose a carpet/rug and what to look for: http://www.interior-design-it-yourself.com/carpet-ratings.html
I like rugs from Rugman.com – they are good quality and actually a good price (considering the quality) http://www.rugman.com/Search/SearchMasterList.aspx?cid=cj&affid=10105485&AID=10356053&PID=2810700
